Hi everyone,
I hope you are all doing well. Here are a few ideas for incorporating music into your learning this week.
Check out this video on percussion instruments. Be sure to watch it all the way through because there are many familiar ones at the beginning but some other interesting ones as you go further! One of the things that I like about this video is that so many of them were recorded in someone’s home – just like what we are going through! Click here for percussion video

The following video focuses on a different family of instruments, the String Family. How many of them do you recognize? What makes them the same? What makes them different? Again, I love that many of these videos were made at someone’s home. Click here for string video

In March of 1958, a young man by the name of Elvis Presley joined the US Army – he ended up being a very famous musician in the style of Rock and Roll. Here is a link to one of his most famous songs, “Blue Suede Shoes.” Give it a listen! Do you like the way it sounds? Does it sound like the music that you listen to? How is it different? John Williams is a famous composer (a person who writes music) and he mostly composes music for movies. Here is a video of John Williams talking about writing the music for Star Wars – The Force Awakens in 2015. Have you ever stopped to think about the music in a movie? How can the music tell you when something is about to happen? Click here for video

Finally, one of the things I love most about music is that it can help bring you joy and provide me with a sense of hope and optimism that everything is going to be ok. In fact, one of the songs that I have been listening to a lot recently is “It’s Gonna be Okay” by The Piano Guys. Do you have a favorite song that you like to listen to that makes you feel happy? What about an adult that you live with? Ask them what their favorite song to listen to when they need cheering up. See if they will listen to it with you! I would love to know what your and your parent’s favorite feel good/cheer you up song is. If you feel like sharing, please send me an email ([email protected]) and include the name of both your and your parent’s feel good song and even a YouTube link if you have it. I would love to listen to them! Click here for The Piano Guys’ - “It's Gonna Be Okay”

I really do miss seeing and making music with each and every one of you. I’ve been trying to teach Oliver, my dog, to Folk Dance but it’s not going very well. I hope we can be together again soon. Until then, stay healthy, wash your hands, and thank your parents for all that they are doing to help you during this difficult time. “Without music, life would be a blank to me.” - Jane Austen
