My name is Mr. Baur and I am a general music and chorus teacher in the Islip School District. I created this site in the hopes that you can find information about all of the classes I teach, ensembles I conduct, and programs I am involved in here in Islip along with information about music in general.

Brass and Woodwind Introduction Video String Introduction Video Good Morning and happy last Monday of our school year. None of us ever thought that the school year would go like this, did we? I hope that you all have a fantastic summer vacation and that you make some happy memories! I can’t wait to see everyone back in school (hopefully) in September! For those of you in Fifth Grade and are in Chorus, I hope that you consider joining my Show Choir at the Middle School next year! For now, here are our last set of videos for this school year. Our first selection this week is not actually a video at all, but rather an interview with a very famous piano player named Michael Chertock. Right now, he plays with a group called the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He calls himself a keyboardist, rather than a pianist. Why do you think he calls himself that? In this interview, he talks a lot about his influences that helped inspire him to be a musician. Even if it is not musical, who inspires you? This is week is Virtual Field Day week here at CRES! I hope you get a chance to get outside and participate and upload those videos to Mr. Orlick and Mrs. Rittberg’s Flipgrid. Be sure to join in the fun at www.flipgrid.com/islipfieldday When you aren’t outside having fun with these activities, here are a few musical ideas for you! First, I have another flash mob video to share with you. This one comes from the UK with students from Mont Rose College performing at a mall in Stratford, UK. Do you recognize any of the music? How do you think the performers prepare to do something like this? Do you think it takes a lot of confidence to do a flash mob? I am so excited that the weather has started to become nicer and I’ve been getting some time to spend outside with my daughter, Samantha. I hope that you have had a chance to get outside and play, too! Although learning is super important, getting time to unwind and just play is important too! Our first video this week is of my favorite type of music – CHORAL MUSIC! It is of a piece called Lunar Lullaby written by Jacob Narverud. I think that it is so pretty. This recording was done in a hotel lobby where the choir was staying. The group is called the Colorado All-State Mixed Choir. That means that the best singers from all over the state of Colorado gathered in this hotel, and practiced the music they had been learning individually, as a group for the first time. Do you think it would be hard to perform this way? How do you think the way the hotel was built helped the song sound so beautiful? Where in your house do you think you could sing that you would hear it echo? As always, please reach out with any videos of your students watching or participating in our lessons. Stay healthy! Email [email protected] or tag me on Twitter @CRESMusic. Have fun! Wing Music Mini Lesson 9 Good morning everyone! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend in some way – even if it was much different than in years past. This week, I want to start with a video of Esperanza Spalding. She is a wonderful jazz singer and bassist. You will notice her holding a guitar, but it is a bass guitar. It plays much lower than a regular guitar. A regular guitar has six strings but a bass guitar has only four. Do you see how fast her fingers are moving? She is also singing words as well as scatting (singing nonsense syllables). Did you notice anything about the performers taking turns during the performance? Here is some more information about Esperanza Spalding that you may find interesting. I hope that you are doing well and staying healthy. This week, I am preparing to go into my classroom and begin to clean it out and organize it for the summer and it really makes me sad. I haven’t seen my classroom since March 13 and it’s going to be hard. I know that many of you will be going to your classrooms to get your belongings this week too. I am sure that makes a lot of you sad as well. As with all things, this will pass. We will get back to school, we will get back to making music. Hang in there! CLICK READ MORE to see the rest of this post. Hi all! Mrs. Cupolo and I miss all of our student's singing voices so much that we want to have a "Virtual Concert" this Spring. I know that many of you have quickly become familiar with FlipGrid so hopefully the process is pretty straight forward. You may notice that not all of the songs that your child has been practicing are there. Coordinating a Virtual Concert is a large undertaking and we think that highlighting three songs for each grade will work real nicely. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! [email protected]. Have fun!
Pro Tip: Have a phone or other device playing the music in the background while your child performs! |
