Wing Music Mini Lesson 9
My name is Mr. Baur and I am a general music and chorus teacher in the Islip School District. I created this site in the hopes that you can find information about all of the classes I teach, ensembles I conduct, and programs I am involved in here in Islip along with information about music in general.

Wing Music Mini Lesson 9 Good morning everyone! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend in some way – even if it was much different than in years past. This week, I want to start with a video of Esperanza Spalding. She is a wonderful jazz singer and bassist. You will notice her holding a guitar, but it is a bass guitar. It plays much lower than a regular guitar. A regular guitar has six strings but a bass guitar has only four. Do you see how fast her fingers are moving? She is also singing words as well as scatting (singing nonsense syllables). Did you notice anything about the performers taking turns during the performance? Here is some more information about Esperanza Spalding that you may find interesting. I hope that you are doing well and staying healthy. This week, I am preparing to go into my classroom and begin to clean it out and organize it for the summer and it really makes me sad. I haven’t seen my classroom since March 13 and it’s going to be hard. I know that many of you will be going to your classrooms to get your belongings this week too. I am sure that makes a lot of you sad as well. As with all things, this will pass. We will get back to school, we will get back to making music. Hang in there! I know that many of you have quickly become familiar with FlipGrid so hopefully the process is pretty straight forward. You may notice that not all of the songs that your child has been practicing are there. Coordinating a Virtual Concert is a large undertaking and we think that highlighting three songs for each grade will work real nicely. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! [email protected]. Have fun!
Pro Tip: Have a phone or other device playing the music in the background while your child performs! We will start this week with an awesome Flash Mob! Who doesn’t love a Flash Mob? This one was performed in Valencia, Italy, and features a whole lot of musicians playing a very famous piece of music called The Year 1812 Solemn Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The piece is more commonly known as The 1812 Overture. Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer and this piece was written to celebrate the Russian’s successful defense against Napoleon's invading army from France in 1812. Click here to see this Flash Mob of The 1812 Overture. If you are patient and listen all the way through, I am fairly confident that you will recognize the piece starting at about the 4:30 mark. What do you think of the idea of a Flash Mob? What was the reaction of the people in that square? Would you have reacted differently? The same? I think my favorite part of this was that there were musicians of all different ages performing together! URL 1 - https://safeyoutube.net/w/VFL5 Click READ MORE to see the rest of this post! Well, today is May the 4th. And all around us we are seeing people celebrate this wonderful day we have come to know as Star Wars Day. “May the 4th be with you!” And don’t forget about tomorrow! “Revenge of the 5th!” In any case, I thought this week I could share some Star Wars resources that you might enjoy. I hope everyone is doing well! Don't forget to click the READ MORE link to see the rest of this post! Happy May! Below are two new videos. They are actually both part of the same lesson. I tried to recreate a typical Wing Music lesson and the two videos together make up that lesson. If you have videos of you doing any of these activities or even better, if you have videos of your PARENTS doing them, I'd love to see them! Email them to [email protected] or tag me on Twitter @CRESMusic. Have fun!
