Happy Monday and Happy June! I am so excited that the weather has started to become nicer and I’ve been getting some time to spend outside with my daughter, Samantha. I hope that you have had a chance to get outside and play, too! Although learning is super important, getting time to unwind and just play is important too!
Our first video this week is of my favorite type of music – CHORAL MUSIC! It is of a piece called Lunar Lullaby written by Jacob Narverud. I think that it is so pretty. This recording was done in a hotel lobby where the choir was staying. The group is called the Colorado All-State Mixed Choir. That means that the best singers from all over the state of Colorado gathered in this hotel, and practiced the music they had been learning individually, as a group for the first time. Do you think it would be hard to perform this way? How do you think the way the hotel was built helped the song sound so beautiful? Where in your house do you think you could sing that you would hear it echo?

Our second video is a recording of an orchestra playing a piece called Andante for Clarinet and Orchestra and it was written in 1839 by Alice Mary Smith. Why do you think it has the title that it does? I am actually listening to this piece while I am writing this note to you – it's very relaxing. Alice Mary Smith was widely considered to be one of the most famous female composers of the Victorian Era in England. The Victorian Era is what they called the time between 1837 and 1901 when Queen Victoria was Queen of England. It was rare back then for women to become famous composers.

Check out this fun book about a rooster looking for his place in the Jazz Band. The book is called Acoustic Rooster and his Barnyard Band written by Kwame Alexander. Do you remember the term “scatting” that we talked about in previous lessons? Have you heard of any of the musicians named in the book? They are all real people and were very famous!

The next video is of the Temple University Marching Band. They are performing a song called “High Hopes” written by a band called Panic! at the Disco. Have you ever seen a marching band perform? Not only do they have to learn all of the music and have it memorized, they also have to be moving at the same time. And not just in a straight line, like a parade – they actually create “pictures” on the football field. Do you think that’s hard to do? Would you want to try?

Finally, here is my Piano Guys video of the week. It is a mashup of a “Over the Rainbow” and “Simple Gifts.” Do you think the songs fit well together? How do you think musicians know which songs will work well with each other? Where do you think this recording was made?
