My name is Mr. Baur and I am a general music and chorus teacher in the Islip School District. I created this site in the hopes that you can find information about all of the classes I teach, ensembles I conduct, and programs I am involved in here in Islip along with information about music in general.
If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please use the button below to email me.

Hi Mrs. Katsch, Mrs. Haak, and Mrs. Johnson's class! I miss you so much! I hope you are able to view these videos and follow along with me as we do music class at home! If any of you get videos of your students participating, I would LOVE to see them. Either tweet them to me using @CRESMusic or email the video to me, [email protected]. Enjoy! You may notice that there is no Mini Lesson 2. Mini Lesson 2 and I are having an argument and it's not working. Continue to focus on staying healthy and your mental health as well. Best wishes to all!!
********************************** Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well. Here are a few ideas for incorporating music into your learning this week. Check out this video on percussion instruments. Be sure to watch it all the way through because there are many familiar ones at the beginning but some other interesting ones as you go further! One of the things that I like about this video is that so many of them were recorded in someone’s home – just like what we are going through! Click here for percussion video URL - https://watchkin.com/d57895a678 The following video focuses on a different family of instruments, the String Family. How many of them do you recognize? What makes them the same? What makes them different? Again, I love that many of these videos were made at someone’s home. Click here for string video URL - https://watchkin.com/2ec5a83574 In March of 1958, a young man by the name of Elvis Presley joined the US Army – he ended up being a very famous musician in the style of Rock and Roll. Here is a link to one of his most famous songs, “Blue Suede Shoes.” Give it a listen! Do you like the way it sounds? Does it sound like the music that you listen to? How is it different? Click here for video URL - https://watchkin.com/96f64be464 John Williams is a famous composer (a person who writes music) and he mostly composes music for movies. Here is a video of John Williams talking about writing the music for Star Wars – The Force Awakens in 2015. Have you ever stopped to think about the music in a movie? How can the music tell you when something is about to happen? Click here for video URL - https://watchkin.com/3e9cf224b5 Finally, one of the things I love most about music is that it can help bring you joy and provide me with a sense of hope and optimism that everything is going to be ok. In fact, one of the songs that I have been listening to a lot recently is “It’s Gonna be Okay” by The Piano Guys. Do you have a favorite song that you like to listen to that makes you feel happy? What about an adult that you live with? Ask them what their favorite song to listen to when they need cheering up. See if they will listen to it with you! I would love to know what your and your parent’s favorite feel good/cheer you up song is. If you feel like sharing, please send me an email ([email protected]) and include the name of both your and your parent’s feel good song and even a YouTube link if you have it. I would love to listen to them! Click here for The Piano Guys’ - “It's Gonna Be Okay” URL - https://watchkin.com/5efc0aeb51 I really do miss seeing and making music with each and every one of you. I’ve been trying to teach Oliver, my dog, to Folk Dance but it’s not going very well. I hope we can be together again soon. Until then, stay healthy, wash your hands, and thank your parents for all that they are doing to help you during this difficult time. “Without music, life would be a blank to me.” - Jane Austen Mr. Baur :) I hope that this post finds all of you well. Times are certainly challenging right now but I hope that you find some time to reflect, smile, laugh, joke, and enjoy this unexpected time with your families. While much of the work that we do each day in our classroom cannot be replicated online, I have begun to pull some links to videos and activities that I enjoy and that I hope you do too. Please click on the "Distance Learning" tab at the top of my site and scroll through some of the links there. Parents and families of 3rd Grade students - as soon as we get back to school, we will begin discussing the instruments of the Band and Orchestra in preparation for choosing your instrument to play going into fourth grade. Feel free to get a jump start on that by checking out some of the information and videos posted in the 3rd Grade Instrument Sign-Up tab at the top. NYSSMA Students - please continue to sing the music that we have begun to learn together. All songs are available by clicking on the NYSSMA link at the top of the page. Chorus and TrebleMakers Students - there is no real good way of learning our music as a group in the situation that we are currently in. For now, please find music to sing along to or teach your family member a favorite canon/round that we have learned this year in chorus/Treblemakers. I did put some recordings of songs on the Chorus and TrebleMakers pages for you to listen to or sing along to! For everyone, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] if there is something specific that you are looking for or with any general questions. Most of all - stay safe, stay healthy, and wash those hands! --Mr. Baur :) The CRES TrebleMakers Spring 2020 schedule is linked below!
Concert videos have been posted to our districts Fine and Performing Arts Sway. Please click the link below to visit the Sway and feel free to listen to all of the wonderful and talented students all across our district - but of course, especially your child! Islip Public Schools Spring Concert Sway We are now recruiting members for the 2018-2019 CRES Chorus and CRES TrebleMakers. All students entering Grade 4 and Grade 5 may participate. Please see the attached form for more information and return to Mr. Baur by Friday, June 8! Click here for Permission Slip! I am sharing the following information with you regarding an outside organization which is not affiliated with the Islip School District. MYO is a wonderful organization which provides children with access to quality choral music education with a focus on healthy singing habits as well as giving students additional performance opportunities outside of school. There are several auditioned choirs in which our students may join. Suffolk Treble Choir under the direction of Craig Knapp and Suffolk Concert Choir under the direction of Melanie Dominick. The choirs perform three concerts each year. Joining these groups allow your child to have more exposure to choral music and have the opportunity to meet other students with the same passion for singing that they have. Mr. Knapp is a past president of SCMEA (The Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association) and has conducted many All-County honor choirs and I am positive that your children will benefit greatly from singing with him. Mrs. Dominick is also a past All-County conductor and has an extensive background in choral music from which students will learn so much!
Students who are entering Grades 4-6 in the fall would be joining the Suffolk Childrens’ Choir with Mr. Knapp. Those students entering Grades 7-8 in the fall would be joining the Suffolk Concert Choir with Mrs. Dominick. Full descriptions of the groups can be found on the MYO website. Auditions are being held on June 9, 2018. If your child performed at NYSSMA, they may absolutely use their NYSSMA solo as their audition piece. They would need to bring a CD player and a CD to the audition. If students are not involved in NYSSMA, they can certainly sing an excerpt from either their TrebleMakers music, IMS Chorus music, IMS Show Choir music, or CRES Chorus music. I can provide them with a recording to use. To schedule an audition, please visit www.myo.org/auditions. There you will find a list of frequently asked questions about MYO and there is a $25 non-refundable audition fee. If you have any additional questions about MYO, please feel free to reach out to me. Many current and former CRES and IMS students have been a part of this organization and recommend it highly! What a fantastic day the CRES TrebleMakers had at the League of Yes on Saturday, May 5, 2018! They opened the League of Yes with a wonderful performance of the Star Spangled Banner and then were amazing buddies to all of the special needs players of the league! What an absolutely heart-warming day! Please visit the TrebleMakers page to see a complete gallery of all photos! |
